A Brooklyn director has released a film that depicts dancehall as empowerment tool for women.
“Bruk Out” follows six dancehall queens from various countries as they compete in the 2014 International Dancehall Queen competition. The director Cori McKenna says the dancing allows women to take sexual power back from men.
At the film’s premiere in June, it was picked up by an unnamed digital distributor, so it will be available to the public in a few months.
McKenna is a former editor for HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and Super Size Me.
