As we get ready to celebrate Jamaica’s 59th year of Independence, Miramar Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis has put together a Pre-Independence Day Fete that promises to be fun for all. WZPP/WZOP Morning Drive hosts, Mikey Mike and Ms. Chin, had the opportunity to join Commissioner Davis on her Miramar TV video series, “Commission Corner with Alexandra P. Davis”. The discussion focused on what Independence Day means to us here in South Florida as well as some of the cultural traditions of the celebration. Of course we are talking delicious food and drinks, great music, and fun for the kids. All of which will be in abundance on Sunday, August 1st from 3-11pm at Miramar Regional Park. WZOP/WZPP will be broadcasting live. The big belly man himself, Sky Juice, of Metromedia fame will be on hand, as the focus of the event is to showcase Jamaica’s unique sound system culture. Many other sounds will also be participating in the day’s festivities as well as a wide variety of vendors serving up all types of Jamaican cuisine. This event has been put together with the entire community in mind. For Jamaican nationals living abroad this is a chance to revel in the tastes and sounds of home, and for those here in Florida who would like to experience Jamaica’s rich culture, this is an excellent way to have an authentic experience.
Commissioner Davis has served the community in various capacities. She has worked tirelessly to foster “diversity, tolerance and unity”. In addition to her civic duty, she is also a certified educator and heads up a nonprofit she created in 2015, CATAF; Caribbean American Teachers Association of Florida. She has received countless awards and accolades over the years. They are a testament to the hard work she puts in; always going the extra mile for her constituents. The Jamaica 59th Pre-Independence Day Fete is an example of one of the extra projects she takes on to make life better for those in the City of Miramar as well as to bring in visitors from surrounding areas.
